Da Vinci Trail: Maxwell Food Centre

without comments

After much enthusiastic discussion in our bunk over what we’re gonna eat at Maxwell Food Centre, only 3 of us turned up for the eating part (dunno why it always turns out this way, it’s a curse!). By the way it’s named Da Vinci becos we’re going to catch The Da Vinci Code after our eating spree.

Anyway after meeting at Tanjong Pagar station, we headed out confident that we could find the place although none of us knew the way. And as expected we were lost (yay.) After much walking and finally asking people for directions we reached Maxwell Food Centre (the feeling was like finding the Holy Grail!) But that’s not before we actually walked to Lau Pa Sat thinking we were on the right track.

Check the picture below

After a tiring long walk, we reached the place at about 2pm. It was already pretty quiet then (What happened to all the office crowds? And more importantly the OLs?!) But less people meant we could find seats easily =) We finally settled down but unfortunately the Tian Tian Chicken rice we wanted to eat wasn’t open. Unable to surpress our urge for chicken rice, we opted for another stall nearby.

It looks small but that’s actually half a chicken. The meat was tender but a little too fat and hard to chew. The chilli was alright. Overall it was nothing spectecular, just tasted like normal chicken rice.

Next we had 五香 from one of the stalls, it’s crispy and hot and the sauce is not bad as well.

After that we decided to head over to Hong Lim food centre for dessert. The cocktail jelly was normal but that’s not what it was famous for. The place was also home to alot of nice food but we didn’t have time to try them becos we had a movie to catch at 1530.

After quickly finishing up our dessert, we headed off to meet Aron (the guy who always cannot make it) and took the NEL to Dhoby Ghaut to reach The Cathay Cineplex. We immediately headed to the counter buy 4 tickets (1 for Kelvin aka Damn Brown).

Ok since it’s the Da Vinci trail I’m going to do a small review of the movie as well. Overall the movie just sucked for those who have read the book. Certain scenes were changed to acommodate the length of the movie, that was fine as long as it captured the essence of the book. But it really didn’t cut it for me. The suspense and craving for more action was not as intense as compared to reading the book. But the controversial storyline was brought out and i think it managed to make an impact on those who haven’t read the book.

To those who haven’t read the book, please read it. It’s 10 times better than the movie and you can understand more on what you’ve missed out.

The Beginning: Golden Mile Food Centre

without comments

It was a rainy Friday evening when 3 hungry NSF decided that they wanted try the delicious food they’ve talked so much about in camp. Although the sky was gloomy and dark, their spirits weren’t dampened. It was on this seemingly normal day that our Makantrail was started.

First up we tasted the pasta from Pasta Planet. I’ve heard about it somewhere and it was supposed to be pretty good. Service was good, there was a choice of 4 pasta (Wow!) and the boss was polite. The serving was okay but the pasta was not as nice as expected. And after much discussion with our pasta expert Peng Boon, we gave it a score of 2.5/5.

(Ok, enough of normal english)

But the calamari deserves special mention. Big and bouncy sotong rings fried in batter until golden brown and dipped in mayo. Damn songs!

After a round of shopping at the army market to digest what we’ve eaten earlier, we tried the famous claypot rice that you need to wait damn long for. Some cockster decided to order 3 people’s share worth of claypot rice. And we waited and waited. Really damn long. After 30 minutes and wondering whether the auntie is bringing our rice when she walk pass, our claypot rice finally came. Wah lans really damn big! We were pretty shocked. But never mind la eat first then say. It was really good. Inside the rice got chicken, sausage, vegetables and salted fish. Take note to stir the rice if not the salted fish all concentrated one area damn salty. Other then that the claypot rice was wonderful. It was sad that we didn’t finish it cos we were too full.

So to summarise,

Pasta Planet [2.5/5]
Wait damn long Claypot Rice [3/5]
